Pay Attention To The Fine Print. Be Sure To Read These 5 Things Before You Buy A Mattress
Online mattress stores generally offer more friendly policies than traditional brick and mortar shops.
These extended return periods, which are often longer than usual, do not usually include restocking fees and the warranties are generous.
Don’t rely solely on the bolded marketing language they use throughout the site. To avoid surprises later, it is important to carefully read the fine print.
These are five things you should do before purchasing an online mattress.
1. Financing
Many companies offer financing options through partners such as Klarna and Affirm if the mattress you’re interested in is not within your budget.
Before you accept the offer, make sure to read the terms and conditions.These are the most crucial details that you need to confirm.
- What is the interest rate? If you pay within a certain period, you may get zero or lower interest.
- What is the repayment term? Many companies offer options of 3, 6, or 12-month repayment terms. Different repayment terms can result in different interest rates.
- They will finance the whole purchase price or a portion of it.
- Are there late payment penalties?

Most online mattress companies offer free shipping, with some exceptions.
Many companies won’t ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or other non-contiguous US territory like Guam and Puerto Rico. Shipping costs will be charged if they do.
It is important to verify whether shipping charges apply if you live in one of the 48 continental states.
Confirm delivery details.
- What is the delivery time?
- Is white glove delivery available? If so, what is the cost?
- Is it possible to choose a delivery date?
- Are they able to ship expedited?
It is a good idea, unless you’re paying for white glove delivery (where the mattress is delivered and set up by the courier), to verify the weight and dimensions.
You will usually need to have an extra pair of hands to transport the mattress inside and set up the mattress.

Many companies stipulate that the mattress can only be returned after you have slept on it for at least 30 days. This is so customers can get to know the mattress before returning it.
However, returns are often free.Some companies may charge a restocking fee, or require you to pay return shipping.
You should also check the return policy. Many online mattress companies will pick up your mattress from you. Some companies ask that you donate the mattress to a local charity and give them the receipt.

Some companies also offer returns and the possibility of swapping your mattress for a new one.
You might have to replace the mattress if you feel it is necessary. Before you place your order, read the Ts & Cs.
If you want to exchange your mattress for one that is more expensive, you will usually have to pay the difference. You should check if there are additional fees or if you will be responsible for returning shipping.
Many mattress companies don’t offer a trial period after you exchange your mattress. If you don’t like the mattress, you can return it or exchange it.

Warranty
Before you buy a mattress, make sure to read the warranty. You will find the link to the complete warranty at the bottom of most websites.
Contact the company to request a copy via email if you are unable to locate it.
Here are some important details about the warranty, in addition to the warranty term.
- Are you looking for a prorated or non-prorated warranty? The most common warranty is non-prorated. This means that the company will fully cover you if you make a claim. To get a new mattress, you will need to pay a portion of the purchase price. This percentage is dependent on how long the mattress has been in your home. It’s usually zero for the first two to five years, and then goes up each year.
- What is the warranty covering? The warranty covers quality issues, such as a zipper not working or depressions greater than 1-4 cm in the foam. Incorrect use of the foundation, or damage caused by misuse, is not covered. Also, accidents such as soiling of the mattress or burns are not usually covered.
- Shipping costs. Find out who is responsible for shipping the mattress.
